National Strategy for the Prevention of Juvenile Addiction

The Ministry of Digital Governance and the General Secretariat of Telecommunications and Post have developed a National Strategy for the Protection of Minors from Internet Addiction, which is based on a multidimensional approach and includes three main pillars: awareness, development of digital tools, and institutional interventions.

The strategy aims to raise awareness among parents, educators, and children about the risks of excessive use of online platforms and algorithmic techniques that enhance addictive behaviors. In this context, informative actions will be implemented and digital tools will be developed, such as the Kids Wallet, which will allow parents to regulate the internet usage time of their children, block addictive content, and monitor online activities safely.

At the same time, the strategy includes institutional and regulatory interventions at national and European levels, aiming to impose stricter rules on major digital platforms. Among these are the establishment of a European digital maturity limit, the prohibition of creating profiles for minors for content customization, as well as the restriction of functions such as endless scrolling and autoplay, which enhance addiction. Greece will actively contribute to the revision of the Digital Services Act (DSA) and the design of the new EU Digital Fairness Act, which will aim to protect minors from the negative impacts of technology and the digital economy.

The National Strategy for the Protection of Minors from Internet Addiction is part of the broader effort of the Ministry of Digital Governance for a digital transformation that will benefit society to the maximum extent, ensuring that minors have access to a safe, creative, and supportive online environment.
