Visit of the European Commission's Commissioner for Defense and Space, Andrius Kubilius, to the development site of the Greek GOVSATCOM Hub

On Tuesday, May 5, 2026, the European Commission's Commissioner for Defense and Space, Mr. Andrius Kubilius, visited the facilities in Agia Paraskevi where the Greek GOVSATCOM Hub will be developed, accompanied by the Minister of Digital Governance, Mr. Dimitris Papastergiou, the Secretary General of Telecommunications and Post, Mr. Konstantinos Karantzalos, the Deputy Chief of the Hellenic National Defense General Staff, Vice Admiral Mr. Mikropoulos, and the Deputy Chief of the Hellenic Navy General Staff, Vice Admiral Mr. S. Lagaras, as well as members of the Commissioner's cabinet and the Ministries of Digital Governance and National Defense.

The GOVSATCOM Hub is a critical infrastructure of the European program EU GOVSATCOM, which aims to provide secure, resilient, and reliable satellite communications to government users and authorities of the Member States. The program supports national security missions, civil protection, crisis management, border surveillance, maritime security, and the protection of critical infrastructures, ensuring a high level of operational continuity even in crisis environments or hybrid threats. Two GOVSATCOM Hubs will be constructed in Europe, one in Greece and one in Germany, and they are expected to become key points of the European secure satellite communications network, enhancing both national and European resilience and strategic autonomy capabilities.

During the visit, an on-site presentation of the area that will host the project was conducted, where construction and preparation of the facilities have already begun. The Commissioner was informed about the strategic importance of the GOVSATCOM Hub for both Greece and the European Union, with an emphasis on its role in enhancing secure government satellite communications, the resilience of critical infrastructures, and European strategic autonomy in the field of space communications.

As part of the visit, a tour of the existing Navy bunker, which forms the core of the existing infrastructure on which the project is being developed, was conducted. The plans for the final configuration of the GOVSATCOM Hub were also presented to depict the future operational image and the overall development of the facilities after the construction is completed.

Additionally, the Commissioner toured the facilities of the Eastern Mediterranean Command Headquarters (EMCHQ), where the existing capabilities of secure strategic communications and their connection with the future capabilities of the GOVSATCOM Hub were presented.

The visit confirmed the importance of the project at the European level and highlighted Greece's strategic contribution to the development of European secure satellite communications and space security capabilities.
