Konstantinos Karantzalos, General Secretary of Telecommunications and Post, participated in the event titled “Greece as a Hub of Development on the Global Digital Map,” which was co-organized by the Ministries of Digital Governance, Environment and Energy, and Development, in the panel titled "Connecting Continents: Submarine Cables and Global Connectivity."
In his speech, he highlighted the reasons why Greece is assuming an increasingly important role on the global digital map.
As he noted, more than 20 submarine cables already land in Greece, creating the conditions for faster data transfer to the Middle East, Africa, and Asia, thereby attracting significant investments in data centers.
At the same time, Greece and the southeastern borders of Europe have been designated—following relevant initiatives by the Ministry—as an area of strategic importance for digital infrastructure. This designation paves the way for European funding for new connectivity projects. The objective is to develop alternative cable routes to reduce dependence on congestion points, such as the Suez region, and to enhance the resilience of international data networks
In addition, the government is working closely with the competent Ministries and security authorities to ensure the protection and monitoring of critical infrastructure, while also planning the creation of a control center in the Eastern Mediterranean that will utilize data transmitted through submarine cables.
With new investments, the continuous strengthening of connectivity, and the development of critical digital infrastructure, Greece is reinforcing its position as a key hub on the international “data highways.”
