On February 26, the inaugural meeting of the SEEWQCI project took place at the Ministry of Digital Governance and Artificial Intelligence, as part of the second phase of the implementation of the European Quantum Communication Infrastructure (EuroQCI). This new phase aims to interconnect and ensure the interoperability of the national quantum communication infrastructures of the member states, enhancing the security of European communications and the protection of critical infrastructures.
The General Secretariat of Telecommunications and Post actively supports the development of quantum communication infrastructures in Europe, with the official launch of the SEEWQCI (Southeast Europe – West Quantum Communication Infrastructure) project, which took place on February 26–27, 2026, in Athens. The project, coordinated by GRNET with the support of the General Secretariat of Telecommunications and Post, is the next step in the implementation of EuroQCI and connects the National Quantum Communication Infrastructures of Greece (HellasQCI), Cyprus (CYQCI), Bulgaria (BGQCI), and the Netherlands (NL-QCI).
The General Secretary of Telecommunications and Post, Konstantinos Karantzalos, emphasized that beyond SEEWQCI, significant European initiatives in the field of quantum communications are underway, such as BeneluxQCI, SBIQCI, BAT-QCI, PIONIER-Q-SAT, QUAPITAL, QRUSOE, CEQCI, and TransEuroOGS, involving more than 15 member states. As he noted, “continuous investment in quantum technologies—and particularly in telecommunications—is a critical factor for securing Europe’s digital future.”
With the support of the General Secretariat of Telecommunications and Post and the coordination of the National Infrastructures for Research and Technology (GRNET), Greece continues to play an active role in the development and implementation of European initiatives of high strategic importance in the field of advanced telecommunications.
The inaugural meeting included speeches by government representatives, national authorities, research organizations, and the European Commission, as well as high-level discussions on:
• the strategic dimension of EuroQCI
• coordination between parallel quantum infrastructure projects under the CEF
• cross-border interoperability of national quantum networks
SEEWQCI is a key pillar for achieving the goals of the Digital Decade 2030 and strengthens Greece’s position as a reliable and active hub in the emerging European quantum ecosystem.
